Welcome aboard

It’s not just a fish shop. Not just a restaurant, a bistro, a bar, a bakery or a smokehouse. Mariner’s Wharf is a harbourfront emporium on the edge of the sea, where locals and jetsetters rub shoulders with old salts and venerable fishing captains.

A day on the wharf

From tide
to table.

The boats come in, the smokers are lit, the bread comes out of the oven and the grill starts to sizzle. Follow a day at Mariner’s Wharf, from first light to the last nightcap.

01 Dawn · The Fishmarket

The catch comes in.

Fisherman’s Wharf®, our fishmarket, is built around the hull of the Kingfisher, an original 1940s wooden trawler from the Hout Bay fleet. Fish are cleaned and filleted in full view, and our live lobster tank is one of the few in the country open to the public. Pick your lobster and choose its size.

02 Morning · Smokeries & Bakery

Oak smoke and warm bread.

Snoek is smoked over real oak in our smokeries, from a Cape Coast® recipe handed down through the Dorman family. On smoking days it flies off the shelves while it’s still warm. Next door, our bakers make the seed loaf that every table upstairs gets before the meal. Come early and the white bread is still warm too.

03 Midday · Wharfette® Bistro

Fish ’n chips on the wharfside.

The Wharfette® has been frying since day one in 1984. Piping-hot hake and chips, snoek, calamari, Surfburgers® and Lekkerbekkies® fish cakes, eaten on wooden benches right on the wharf, where the waves lap the shore and the gulls squeal with delight.

04 Sundown · Wharfside® Grill

Lobster upstairs, as the bay turns gold.

Upstairs, the Wharfside® Grill seats more than 350 over the harbour. It’s known for lobster, prawns and fisherman’s baskets, and for house originals like Calaprawnia® and Houtbaisse®. Afterwards, there’s the Crayclub® bar for a Merry Mermaid or a Bosun’s Blunder. Some come in a glass you can keep.

On the wharf

Nine ports of call, one red roof.

Restaurants, a bar, a fishmarket, a smokery and bakery, a liquor store and three shops of treasure. Follow the signs.

Our story

It is all real.

“At Mariner’s Wharf it is all real. From the figurehead that welcomes you to the restaurant upstairs, to the fishing boat and wheelhouse that overlook the fresh fish shop.” Maritime Southern Africa, on the Wharf’s 21st birthday, 2005

From the archive

“Way back in 1974 I visited San Francisco for the first time, and the excitement of its burgeoning harbourfront reminded me of my childhood in rustic Hout Bay, the fishing village of my birth.”

“From Reykjavik to Tokyo, from Seattle to Sydney, collecting artefacts, researching ideas, evaluating heritage. And, ever so gradually, Mariner’s Wharf began to take shape in my mind.”

Stanley Dorman, founder
  1. Simon Dorman arrives in Hout Bay. The Dormans have fished the bay ever since.

  2. Stanley, born and raised in Hout Bay, takes over a struggling fishing business with four boats. It grows into the Cape Coast group.

  3. A first visit to San Francisco’s harbourfront plants an idea.

  4. Mariner’s Wharf opens, with its Fishmarket built around the hull of the trawler Kingfisher.

  5. The Wharfside® Grill upstairs is upgraded, completing the emporium.

  6. Nominated as an Eat Out Neighbourhood Gem, and still growing under the Dorman family’s watchful eyes.
